Description

A simple and comforting recipe for creamy mashed sweet potatoes, steamed to tender perfection and blended with butter, milk, and a touch of maple syrup for natural sweetness. Perfect as a side dish for any meal, with optional parsley garnish for a fresh finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 6 medium-sized)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, plus extra to taste
  • 2 tablespoons melted salted butter
  • ½ cup milk (2% recommended, or your choice)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon finely minced parsley (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep Sweet Potatoes: Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Peel them and cut into 1-2 inch cubes for even cooking.
  2. Steam Sweet Potatoes: Place a steamer basket inside a large pot and add water just below the basket level. Add a pinch of salt to the water, then place the cubed sweet potatoes into the basket.
  3. Cook: Cover the pot and heat over medium-high heat until the water comes to a boil. Steam the sweet potatoes for 20-30 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork.
  4. Mash: Transfer the steamed sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Add melted butter, milk, ¼ teaspoon salt, and maple syrup.
  5. Whip/Mash: Use an electric mixer to whip until smooth and creamy, or mash by hand with a potato masher if preferred.
  6. Serve: Serve the mashed sweet potatoes immediately, optionally garnished with finely minced parsley for a fresh touch.

Notes

  • Steaming the sweet potatoes helps retain moisture and nutrients better than boiling.
  • Adjust the amount of maple syrup for desired sweetness.
  • Milk choice can be customized to preference, including dairy-free alternatives.
  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
  • Best served fresh but can be reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
