This homemade Teriyaki Sauce recipe is a perfect blend of savory, sweet, and tangy flavors characteristic of Japanese cuisine. Made with soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, and a hint of ginger and garlic, this versatile sauce can be used as a marinade, glaze, or dipping sauce. It’s easy to prepare on the stovetop and thickens to a glossy, delicious finish that will complement a variety of dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated

Thickening Slurry

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, 1/4 cup water, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir the mixture well to blend all ingredients together.
  2. Simmer Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir occasionally until the brown sugar is completely dissolved and the sauce begins to simmer gently.
  3. Prepare Slurry: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water to create a smooth slurry without lumps.
  4. Thicken Sauce: Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce while stirring continuously to avoid clumping.
  5. Cook to Desired Consistency: Continue to cook the sauce for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until it thickens to a glossy and smooth texture.
  6. Finalize and Cool: Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly. It is now ready to be used as a marinade, glaze, or dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, continue simmering the sauce for an additional minute until desired thickness is reached.
  • For a thinner sauce, add water one tablespoon at a time until you reach preferred consistency.
  • This teriyaki sauce is versatile and can be used as a marinade for meats, a glaze for grilled foods, or simply as a dipping sauce.
