Ingredients
Scale
Base Layer
- 1 box Ritz crackers (about 30 crackers)
Toffee Mixture
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
Topping
- 2 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk)
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Arrange Ritz Crackers: Place a single layer of Ritz crackers on the lined baking sheet. Make sure the crackers do not overlap to ensure even coverage and cooking.
- Make Toffee Mixture: In a saucepan set over medium heat, combine the softened unsalted butter and packed brown sugar. Stir constantly until the mixture starts to boil, then let it boil gently for about three minutes without stirring to achieve the perfect toffee consistency.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Quickly and evenly pour the hot toffee mixture over the arranged Ritz crackers, making sure each cracker is fully covered for an even coating.
- Bake the Toffee Base: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for five minutes, or until the mixture is bubbly and caramelized.
- Add Chocolate Topping: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate chips sit for about two minutes to soften and melt from the residual heat.
- Spread Melted Chocolate and Add Nuts: Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the entire surface. If using, sprinkle chopped nuts evenly on top to add crunch and flavor.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate hardens and the toffee becomes firm. Once cooled, break into pieces and serve.
Notes
- You can substitute the chocolate chips with your preferred type of chocolate, such as dark chocolate or white chocolate.
- The chopped nuts are optional but add great texture; pecans or walnuts work particularly well.
- Ensure you let the chocolate chips melt completely before spreading to get a smooth topping.
- The toffee can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.
- Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to avoid sticking when cooling and breaking into pieces.
