Description

Sausage Gravy Breakfast Pizza is a hearty and flavorful brunch dish that combines creamy homemade sausage gravy, melted cheeses, and perfectly fried eggs atop a pre-baked pizza crust. This American breakfast favorite offers a delicious twist on southern comfort food, perfect for weekend breakfasts or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Pizza Base and Toppings

  • 1 pre-baked 12-inch pizza crust
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Eggs and Garnish

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sausage Gravy: Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir constantly for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  2. Make the Gravy: Gradually pour in the whole milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add salt and black pepper, then simmer the mixture for 4 to 5 minutes until the gravy thickens to a creamy consistency. Remove from heat once thickened.
  3. Assemble the Pizza: Place the pre-baked pizza crust on a baking sheet. Evenly spread the warm sausage gravy over the pizza crust. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheeses evenly over the gravy layer.
  4. Bake the Pizza: Place the assembled pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
  5. Cook the Eggs: While the pizza bakes, melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Fry the eggs to your preferred doneness (sunny side up, over easy, etc.).
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the pizza from the oven and carefully top it with the fried eggs. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Slice into six pieces and serve warm for a satisfying breakfast or brunch.

Notes

  • Scrambled eggs can be used instead of fried eggs for easier serving and distribution on the pizza.
  • For an extra kick of flavor, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sausage gravy while it simmers.
  • Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently to maintain texture and flavor.
